Propolis, also known as bee glue or resin, is a resin-like substance produced by bees and used in different ways by humans for centuries. In our online shop, you can buy propolis in various forms.

What Exactly is Propolis?

Bees produce propolis by collecting resins from buds and tree wounds – such as willows, poplars, chestnuts, birches, spruces, firs, or pines. These reddish-brown substances are mixed with enzymes, pollen, and wax. The final product is a versatile natural substance whose exact composition varies depending on the beehive’s location and surrounding flora.

What is the Purpose of Propolis in the Beehive?

Bees use propolis to line their hive, seal cracks and entry holes, and keep it isolated from the outside. They also coat intruders or carcasses with propolis and wax, sometimes forming “mummies” inside the hive.

How is Propolis Harvested?

Beekeepers collect propolis by placing special grids in the hive, which the bees seal with propolis. After removal, the raw material is purified and processed into tinctures, solutions, creams, or capsules. Since propolis is a rare bee product – a colony produces only about 0.5 kg per year – it is especially valuable.

Composition of Propolis

The components of propolis vary but generally consist of:

50% resins and balsams,

35% waxes,

10% essential oils,

5 % pollen.

Additionally, propolis contains - in small quantities - flavonoids, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. The composition is always unique, no beekeeper will ever obtain the same propolis.

Important Notes
